Crafts and Hobbies

These are some of the stools that I have made for my kids and for my friends' kids.  I do not have step by step pictures of the process, but I can explain what I do!  First, I buy the stools from Michaels, AC Moore, or any craft store.  The stools with 4 legs are the sturdiest.  Next, I sand them and then prime them with regular white primer.  The next question I am always asked is if I draw the pictures by hand.  I do draw the pictures freehand, however, I usually use an image from clipart to help me.  I believe the dinosaur was a small sticker that I just used as an image.  I just about always change the paint colors, but I could never do it all without a reference!  Anyway, I draw the image in pencil and then add something for background and decide the best place to put the child's name.  Once my image is sketched out, I paint the image.  I use simple acrylic paints from a craft store.  I always paint the image first and the background and legs of the stool last.  The first coat of paint needs to dry for about an hour and then the second coat can be applied.  The elephant stool is an unfinished stool that only has one coat, so you can see easily that it needs another.  Finally, I add in the outlines with sharpie marker!  Adding the outlines last is really important!  It will help you to cover up some of the mistakes you might have made and it gives a sharp look to the stool.  Last, but not least, I protect the stools with a shiny sealer.  I have used spray and paint before.  Both work fine.  My twins will need stools soon, so I will add pictures of the while process when the time comes!
